Should teaching be a popularity contest? Probably not. But skilled educators know the value of having good relationships with students. Establishing goodwill can help minimize classroom disruptions, improve student engagement, and reduce stress for everyone. Here are some approaches to win student support. When you were a student, did you put more effort into an assignment or not cause mischief because you liked a teacher? That teacher you liked was popular at least with you.
As teachers, our primary goals are for students to try hard and behave in our classes. If we can make that happen, then being popular is a good thing. Teachers become popular by building good relationships with their students by treating them the way they would like to be treated. Simply stated, students want to be treated with respect. Talking down to students or lecturing them about their inadequacies will only irritate or frustrate them. Work at getting to know your students as individuals.

Materials funded through DonorsChoose generally belong to the public school or Head Start center at which the teacher is employed when resources are shipped. We make an exception to this ownership policy for the following projects and scenarios, for which materials are owned by students :. Materials are either sent to the school where the teacher is registered on our site when materials are ordered, or to a custom address that the teacher designates when confirming their funding.
In either case, materials should be given to the teacher who submitted the project request, to be used with their students. Unless the project essay clearly indicates that materials are meant to be given to students to use and own, materials are the property of the public school or Head Start center at which the teacher is employed when resources are ordered.
The teacher who created the project is the sole steward of the donation while employed at the school, carrying out the project for which the materials were donated. Depending on the resources requested, the teacher may choose to have the project materials shipped to a custom address. These materials are also owned by the school, and expected to be ultimately returned to the school with the exception of single-use items, consumables, or other resources intended for student ownership as outlined above.
As long as the new school is public, the teacher remains eligible, and the project can be carried out with the same anticipated outcomes in the new school, teachers can update the school information in their account and continue with the project. A fifth-grader in Port St. Lucie, Florida, says she’s too embarrassed to show her face in school after a teacher asked — in front of her entire class — if she was in a relationship with a female classmate. The girl will not return to Northport K-8 School for the rest of the academic year, her mother, Jezenia Gambino told Insider, and will finish the rest of the academic year with homeschooling. The incident was triggered by a rumor that Gambino’s daughter and another girl in her grade were dating, Gambino said, KPTV reported.
When the rumor reached the teacher earlier this month, Gambino said she questioned the girls about whether they were in a same-sex relationship — as their whole class watched. Gambino accused the teacher of using “a tone of anger” when addressing the students, as if they were being “scolded. It’s “digusting” for a teacher to confront the girls about their sexuality simply based on some gossip, Gambino told Insider, noting, “If the rumor had been about my daughter dating a little boy, I do not think the question would have been asked.
Gambino said she didn’t hear about the episode until her year-old daughter became upset after receiving a text from her friend. It hasn’t been easy for the young girl to adjust to being homeschooled by her mother and grandmother, but Gambino said that on top of feeling “ashamed” and “humiliated,” her child was worried that she would be treated differently. The teacher allegedly addressed the class angrily and said “she was in trouble because of the situation,” Gambino said, based on what she heard since her daughter was out of school that day.

This policy highlights the risks in sexual or romantic relationships in the Stanford workplace or academic setting between individuals in inherently unequal positions; prohibits certain relationships between teachers and students; and requires recusal from supervision and evaluation and notification in other relationships.
Applies to all students, faculty, staff, and others who participate in Stanford programs and activities. There are special risks in any sexual or romantic relationship between individuals in inherently unequal positions, and parties in such a relationship assume those risks. In the university context, such positions include but are not limited to teacher and student, supervisor and employee, senior faculty and junior faculty, mentor and trainee, adviser and advisee, teaching assistant and student, principal investigator and postdoctoral scholar or research assistant, coach and athlete, attending physician and resident or fellow, and individuals who supervise the day-to-day student living environment and their students.
Because of the potential for conflict of interest, exploitation, favoritism, and bias, such relationships may undermine the real or perceived integrity of the supervision and evaluation provided. Further, these relationships are often less consensual than the individual whose position confers power or authority believes.

If you really get along with another teacher, there is a mutual interest, and there are no rules against dating other employees, is it still stupid to do it? Working at the same school, you will have a lot in common which is a good thing. Beware though. It doesn’t matter how careful you are, the pupils will eventually find out. Either you will be seen out together or another member of staff inadvertently says more than they should. It’s inevitable and I’ve seen it before. The private lives of staff are of great interest to pupils and they will have you under a microscope unless you are extremely discrete.
If you are in different departments, it’s not so bad if it goes wrong as you are not in each other’s pockets all day. I mean it is no worst than employees in an office dating. Yes it is risk, but sometimes the biggest risk you can take is not taking a risk. I personally do teaching like I am playing a part in a play, and I am on stage the second I walk in the door actually the second I get out of my car.
